The group said Saturday it has abandoned the Somali port city of Kismayo, a day after Kenyan forces attacked the port city in an operation designed to drive out the militant group. Al-Shabab vowed to strike back.
The Kenyan military said Friday's attack involved land, sea and air forces and was done in coordination with African Union and Somali government troops.
VOA's Somali Service reported Friday Kenyan and Somali government troops controlled some northern neighborhoods of Kismayo, but that most of the town, including the airport, was still in al-Shabab hands. Two witnesses said the militants mounted machine guns on the town's tallest buildings.
Al-Shabab, which is allied with al-Qaida, has used Kismayo's seaport to raise money through taxes, as well as to import weapons.
Kenyan forces e ntered Somalia last year after a series of cross-border kidnappings that Kenya blamed on the militant group.
Pro-Somali government forces have been moving toward Kismayo for more than a month. Kenyan warplanes and warships attacked Kismayo earlier this week ahead of the attempt to push the militants out.
The U.N. refugee agency reported Friday that about 12,000 people left Kismayo in the past month, in some cases to avoid forced recruitment by al-Shabab.
The militant group is seeking to overthrow Somalia's government and impose a hardline form of Islamic law in the country. The group once controlled most of southern and central Somalia, but has lost most of its territory over the past 18 months to pro-government forces.

The 'house' is basically the family name. Early transitions from one house to another were inevitably violent; the first peaceable, elective transition in England was from the childless Elizabeth I (Tudor) to James I (Stuart; but rather distantly descended from the Tudor house) in 1603. Despite a bit of trouble with Cromwell the Stuarts hung on until 1714 (by which time England and Scotland had become Great Britain) when there was another elective move â€" again due to the lack of an heir â€" to the Hanovers (again, distant Stuarts). For some reason I've never quite understood the Hanovers became the 'Saxe-Coburg and Gothas' on the death of Queen Victoria, S-C+G having been the house of her husband. The S-C+Gs changed the name to Windsor in 1917, because the original was deemed a bit too German during the course of the First World War. So... that's it. Lots of murders, two childless Queens, and since 1714 a continuous run but under three different house names. Who do you believe you're descended from?

It works just like a surname. It changes when there is a female monarch who changes her name to that of her husband's. It can also change by simply changing it! The current house of Windsor was known as Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and before that it was Hanover. It changed because Queen Victoria, a Hanover, married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. And it changed to Windsor in 1917 because King George V decided it sounded too German. We were at war with Germany at the time. When Charles becomes King, he will belong to the House of Mountbatten-Windsor. It would have been Mountbatten, after Prince Philip's house name (which was also changed from Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, for similar reasons) but it was decided to combine the two House names, it being modern times. Many women like to hyphenate their names, so why not The Queen?

Dynasty...it's the family "name", if you will...descended from different people. Just like a person named Smith had a father named Smith, and will name his children Smith.

The next person on the Throne ,barring accidents ,will be "Prince Charles "who I believe will have something to do with changing the "House " name from "Windsor " to another name . Would it surprise contributors to this "hallowed forum " if this was to come about ?Anyone who talks to tree's as Charles does ,and "binned" a beautiful woman for a "Moose "is capable of anything such as I have suggested.Watch out for a more "Germanic " type of name ,or,or something Asian ,to appease our guests ,you never know with that "bloody idiot " ! !
