LONDON â" Â This year's London Film Festival has Ben Affleck, Dustin Hoffman and the Rolling Stones â" and it's bookended by one of the city's premiere cinematic couples.
Britain's biggest film showcase opens Wednesday with the London-based American director Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie," the animated tale of a boy and his beloved â" but dead â" dog. It ends Oct. 21 with Mike Newell's "Great Expectations," which stars Burton's partner, Helena Bonham Carter, as haunted Miss Havisham.
Highlights of the 56th annual festival include the world premiere of Rolling Stones documentary "Crossfire Hurricane"; Hoffman's directorial debut, "Quartet," about a group of aging opera stars; Affleck's Iran hostage thriller "Argo"; and "The Sessions," in which a polio patient in an iron lung enlists a sex surrogate so he can lose his virginity.

Question by Mike: What do people mean when they use the term "end of the world"? The Earth will be here for five billion years until the sun becomes a red giant. The Earth is only one of trillions of trillions of planets in the universe. The earliest date that cosmologists the universe could come to an end is 30 billion years from now. What do people mean by "the end of the world"? Please explain Best answer for What do people mean when they use the term "end of the world"?:

There are a lot of Stupid people out there that actually believe the would will end because of some event. Did you watch the Movie 2012? That type of end is what they mean. It is all a HOAX, but some people just don't get it.

Excellent question! What always strikes me about the people who use this phrase is how extremely limited their viewpoint is. First, what do they mean by "world"? The planet Earth? The Solar System? The Galaxy with 170 billion stars? Or the whole Universe of trillions of galaxies? And somehow this will all "end" because of some obscure South American tribe's calendar? Or any of the other dozen hokey reasons? And they wonder why no scientists take the 2012 idea seriously!

Different people mean different things by it. Some people believe in various religious myths about some divine plan coming to an end and taking the world as we know it with it. Those stories are as varied as the religions they come from. Very often, that is what someone would mean by the term "end of the world." But this is a science forum and I think we can agree that that's not the answer we're looking for. Typically a scientist, when speaking of the end of the world, would mean either the end of all (or nearly all) human life or the end of all earthly life, such as we expect to happen in some billions of years when the sun burns the earth's surface into cinders. By that time, if our progeny (which of course won't be human anymore) are still confined to earth, then we deserve to be snuffed out. There are other scenarios, though, such as a very large asteroid hitting the earth and either melting or ejecting the entire solid crust of the planet. Many think that the moon was formed by the aftermath of just such an event. It's not likely to happen any time soon.

Typically, NOT the physical destruction of planet Earth, which would be for most scenarios are tremendously violent event (though there are some slower ways to do it). The conception most people would have in mind is something like melting the whole crust, killing all life, just killing all humans, or even the mere large-scale destruction of civilisation. All of those are like firecrackers compared to what it would take to actually make the Earth not be there any more.

When someone uses the term "end of the world", they probably don't know what they're talking about. "Apocalypse", however, means discovery. This is probably the year that after all the dumb asses are through freaking out about whatever, they'll start to have more of a certain respect for not only themselves and their fellow man, but for the planet we all live on.

The idiots who talk about the "end of the world" don't even know what they mean.
