WASHINGTON A House committee says a State Department officer told panel members there were 13 threats made against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya during the six months before the Sept. 11 attack on the facility.
The assault left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.
The panel adds that the officer told it the U.S. mission had made repeated requests for increased security.
A spokesman for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is holding a hearing on the controversy next week, says its source is Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstrom, who was stationed in Libya from September 2011 to June 2012.
According to the panel, Nordstrom has already given a private briefing to members and will be called to testify at the session next Wednesday.
The committee has also requested testimony from a second State Department official, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Programs Charlene Lamb, who is involved in reviewing security requests.
Republicans have accused the Obama administration of being unprepared for the terrorist attack by Muslim extremists on the consulate, then allegedly issuing misinformation about it.
Initially, U.S. United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice suggested the attack was spontaneous, sparked by an anti-Islam video on the Web.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said she's committed to finding out exactly what happened leading up to the assault and whether security requests were made but denied.
"No one wants the answers more than we do here at the (State) Department," Clinton said. It has appointed a review board to investigate the controversy.
A letter to Clinton from the committee chairman, Darrell Issa (R, Calif.) and panel member Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R, Utah) had said the information came from "individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya."

Question by john: When someone is executed under capital punishment, does the death certificate say "Homicide By the State"? I heard this on the radio but don't know if it's true. I need to know if it is true because I will be involved in a debate in ethics class about capital punishment. I will be on the "against" side of the argument. If death certificates do really say "Homicide By the State", I need a source to cite during the debate. This information would really help me in my debate!! Thank you. Best answer for When someone is executed under capital punishment, does the death certificate say "Homicide By the State"?:

I doubt it; homicide in most states is defined by its common-law definition or a variation thereof; "an unlawful killing with malice aforethought." An execution isn't an unlawful killing, it is one that is committed after the defendant receives constitutionally sufficient due process of law.

That will vary by jurisdiction. Timothy McVeigh's simply stated: Lethal Injection. See: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/mcveighcert1.html Texas did/does list the cause of death as homicide, however, there was legislation introduced (HB 93) to change that. The bill stated that: "Some find it disrespectful to their murdered family and friends that the legal execution of the perpetrator should be classified the same on their certificate of death as the victim=s certificate of death." www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/79R/analysis/doc/HB00093H.doc

No. It would simply say death by lethal injection, electrocution, or whatever means was used. A state cannot commit "homicide", which is by definition an unlawful act.

No, it does not. Death certificates list the MEDICAL cause of death. If someone is executed by lethal injection, the cause of death will probably read "cardiac arrest" or whatever it is that the injection causes medically. No death certificate ever contains any legal conclusion. They don't say "killed by drunk driver" or "shot in self-defense by homeowner" or even "trampled by buffalo stampede". They list the medical causes in medical terms.

It does, at least in California. The death certificate of Manny Babbitt, executed in 1999, and the brother of a friend of mine, says homicide. Here is a link to it: http://newhumanist.org.uk/578 You will see a copy of the death certificate- there is a box where homicide is checked off.
