ATHENS â" German Chancellor Angela Merkel was flying to Athens on Tuesday for a visit apparently aimed at cementing Germanyâs support for Greeceâs efforts to impose the austerity needed to keep the country in the euro zone.
Ms. Merkel was to meet with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, President Karolos Papoulias and with Greek and German entrepreneurs on a six-hour visit expected to be accompanied by public protests.
Anxious to give Europeâs most powerful leader a warm and safe reception, Greek authorities are mounting the biggest security operation since 1999 when then-President Bill Clinton visited Athens amid furious protests at NATO airstrikes against the former Yugoslavia.
The fragile coalition government, embroiled in difficult talks with Greeceâs so-called troika of foreign lenders on a 13.5 billion euro austerity package, is eager to contain public anger at Germany, widely regarded as pushing Greece to impose more pain on its citizens in exchange for rescue funding.
Some 7,000 police officers, many brought to the capital from the provinces for the day, will be on standby along with rooftop snipers and protests have been banned in much of downtown Athens. Security will be particularly heavy outside the Parliament and the German Embassy. The police may resort to the use of water cannons if rallies get out of hand.
Civil servants, including teachers and doctors, are walking off the job for a three hours starting at noon to protest Ms. Merkelâs visit and have prepared banners reading âDonât cry for us Mrs. Merkelâ and âMerkel you are not welcome hereâ to wield during rallies.
Daily speculation in the local media about the outcome of Greek negotiations with the troika, aimed at securing a 31.5 billion euro loan without which the country faces default in late November, was eclipsed on Tuesday by anticipation of the German leaderâs visit.
Headlines in center-right newspapers read, âA message of support,â âA decisive visit by Merkelâ and âWe are staying in the euro.â Others, more skeptical, declared âMerkel is bringing no giftsâ and âA day of anger.â
This anger was echoed by a nurse heading into the center to join fellow protesters. âThis is pure provocation, we have to answer back,â said Christina Amanti, 37. âItâs like sheâs visiting her protectorate. Whatâs she going to do, pat us on the back and tell us to keep getting poorer, that itâs good for us?â

Question by Agitator Gnome: What do you call people who want "cooperation between Church and State"? and assert rights only for the churches themselves? "By its decision to carry out the political and moral cleansing of our public life, the Government is creating and securing the conditions for a really deep and inner religious life. The advantages for the individual which may be derived from compromises with atheistic organizations do not compare in any way with the consequences which are visible in the destruction of our common religious and ethical values. The national Government sees in both Christian denominations the most important factor for the maintenance of our society... their rights will not be touched... And it will be concerned for the sincere cooperation between Church and State." -- Adolf Hitler; from speech on the Enabling Act (March 23, 1933) Best answer for What do you call people who want "cooperation between Church and State"?:

I would call that particular one "Adolf Hitler." If there was some point you were trying to make, you failed.

Interesting quote. I had never heard it before. Of course, the answer is Rick Santorum and the other theocrats in the Republican party. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, the religions can't even agree with each other on what moral scruples to force on the rest of us.
Answer by Bill No
Demorats Rick Santorum is a Christian, as is your humble correspondent, and as such we are sick and tired of ignorant Leftists siding with atheists, Moslems, and America-haters bashing our beliefs and Americans traditional way of life. Its a Culture War and those who want to see America become Sodom and Gomorrah shall be stopped...at the ballot box preferably.

Well, establishment of religion in England was mostly about regulating the church. So this is the only precedent that I know of where all rights were reserved to churches, while no freedom of conscience was afforded to individuals. recent GOP/Fox News rhetoric aside...
Answer by Michael
Santorum would have loved Hitler, while" throwing up "at JFK.
Answer by Joe Heaton
The Taliban.

A theocrat.
Answer by Peace through blinding force
First, let's rule out "retarded." Now that we all agree that phrase is a dishonest euphemism for "Church controlled by State" we all know we call such people "Democrats."
Answer by Common Sense
This should not be a church vs state issue like liberals frame it. This is no one should be forced to pay for someone else's condoms. Before we could change insurance companies if we did not like what the insurer did. With government mandates the option of personal choice has been removed. This is about government ramming it down the throats of the public. It is criminal of the Obama admisnistration to again force us to spend. If they want to give free burth control then they have to give it away themselves.
Fault Lines - Mexico's Hidden WarThe spectacular violence of Mexico's drug war grabs international attention. Some 40000 people have been killed since 2006, when President Felipe Calderon deployed Mexican military and security forces in the so-called war against the cartels -- often in gruesome and sadistic ways. But behind the headlines, under cover of impunity, a low- intensity war is being waged. In the second episode of a two-part series, Josh Rushing and the Fault Lines team travel to the state of Guerrero to investigate claims that Mexican security forces are using the drug war as a pretext to repress indigenous and campesino communities. In one of Mexico's poorest and top drug-producing states, where struggling farmers are surrounded by the narco-economy, we ask about the cost of taking the struggle against dispossession into your own hands. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines .tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com
