The world slowing the rate of greenhouse-based climate change would be a good start. One huge problem that sub-Saharan Africa has faced for millennia is the problem of recurrent and severe droughts. They seem to be getting more intense and more destructive in the era of global climate change. Unless this problem is fixed, it's hard to imagine how many arid African nations will ever manage to feed themselves. Arguably, another need is for many African countries that are heavily dependent on exports of food and basic raw materials -- eg. copper -- to find more diversified ways of earning foreign exchange. A big problem with world commodity markets is that they're extremely cyclical, so that a nation that earns good money from coffee or copper or cotton exports in one year may face economic disaster in the next year. African countries -- if they can -- should probably diversity their economies away from excessive reliance on any single export crop or export commodity. Some economists also think African nations should work towards developing a continental common market, so that they're not so dependent on trading ties with many of the old European colonial powers that exploited them for so long. The need for a reduction in government corruption and the looting of the state by political elities also is obvious in many sub-Saharan African countries. Efforts to reduce rapid population growth and the disastrous spread of AIDS also are required in many African countries.
