Question by PG19: How do you translate "To my house" in Portuguese? A minha casa or À minha casa Concerning the composition of a (to) and a (the), that makes à. So is it necessary to use "the" in this sentence? Thank you. Best answer for How do you translate "To my house" in Portuguese?:

Answer by Biohazard
A minha casa so no

Answer by Renato
Eu vou à minha casa. And in this case yes. If you do not want to use a+a = à you can use 'para'

Answer by Me
Be careful about the usage of the accent (`) with the noun “casa”. There are two cases: 1º) If the house is uncertain, undetermined: “a casa” (the house). Do not use à casa. Ex.: Ele chegou a casa (He arrived home). 2º) If the house is certain: à casa (to the house). Ex.: Ele foi à casa da namorada (He went to the house of his girlfriend). In your question, the house is certain, it belongs to you. So, the correct is: “à minha casa”. But note: this happens only if the word in front of the “a” demands the other “a”. Ex.: A árvore caiu sobre a minha casa (the tree felt over my house). Minha mãe foi à minha casa (My mother has gone to my house). Important: after possessive pronouns, it is facultative. So, both of these phrases are correct: “Dirigiu-se à sua fazenda” and “Dirigiu-se a sua fazenda” (He headed to his farm). And remember, the verb “chegar” is a trap, and changes of sense depending of the accent: “chegou à minha casa” (arrived at my house); “chegou a minha carta” (my letter has arrived).

"I am reminded of it as I pass this memorial each morning on my way into the office. The 202 names inscribed here include also the Indonesian bystanders â€" those who were not targeted, but killed nevertheless. The names include people of 23 different nationalities and from all six continents.

In Bali Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, said the anniversary was a day of "contesting emotions" but the attacks had ultimately failed.

"Nothing can replace the empty seat at your family table, the graduations and the christenings you will never know, and the fault line that will always divide into two halves, before Bali and after Bali," she said.

"Here, on these bustling streets, [the bombers] inflicted searing pain and grief that may never end. But even as the debris fell, it was obvious the attack on our sense of ourselves, as Australians, as human beings, had failed ... Today we return here in remembrance, but we also gather in quiet defiance."

Indonesia's foreign minister, Dr Marty Natalegawa, said the bombers from the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah had "utterly failed" and that Indonesian democracy had emerged stronger after the attacks.

"Their attack was nothing less than an assault on humanity, yet, in all this, they have utterly failed," he said. "They tested our resolve, they tested our resilience. We did not succumb." The ceremony was attended by hundreds of victims, families and dignitaries from across the world, including Britain's ambassador to Indonesia.

In St James' Park Maggie Stephens remembered her son, Neil Bowler, 27, who was on a rugby tour when he died in the bombings.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mrs Stephens, 61, from Worcester, said: "Neil was working for the Economist, he was living in Singapore and he played recreational rugby for the Singapore Cricket Club. They took a team of 15 to the annual Bali Tens rugby tournament.

"They took 15 and eight of them were killed, all young men."

Danny Hanley, an Australian, lost two daughters in the blasts, including Simone, who died of burns in a Perth hospital two months after the attacks.

"My eldest daughter, Renae, was right at the front door of the Sari Club when the blast occurred," he said in Bali. "She was one of the first to lose her life ... When I hear of the 88 Australians that died, I shed a tear. My beautiful daughter Simone was number 88."
