Syria Turkey spat continues as they both ban civilian flights - Telegraph.co.uk [getdailynow.blogspot.com]
Cluster munitions drop hundreds of bomblets across a wide area, designed to kill and maim as many people as possible. The bomblets remain live if they don't detonate on first impact and can kill and maim years after they are deployed. Human rights groups say their used near civilian homes can be a war crime.
"Syria's disregard for its civilian population is all too evident in its air campaign, which now apparently includes dropping these deadly cluster bombs into populated areas," said Steve Goose, arms director at Human Rights Watch.
Film footage gathered from towns near Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and Latakia also showed evidence that the weapon had been used. The disturbing videos showed children and adult civilians handling the bomblets.
More than 100 nations have banned their use under a convention, which became international law in 2010, but Syria has not signed it, nor have Russia, China or the United States.
The cluster bombs were deployed as rebels made a renewed push to seize more territory close to the Turkish border. Several hundred soldiers became trapped when rebel fighters laid siege to a military base in the town of Urum al-Sughra, on the main road between Aleppo and Turkey, activists said.
"Rebels attacked an armoured column sent from Aleppo to rescue the 46th Regiment at Urum al-Sughra and stopped it in its tracks," Firas Fuleifel, one of the activists told Reuters by phone from the neighbouring Idlib province, west of Aleppo.
In another reported victory for the opposition, rebels claimed to have down a Syrian fighter jet on Saturday night. Video footage posted on YouTube showed large metal parts, some on fire, scattered around muddy surrounding by a cheering crowd.
The Syrian air force has been instrumental to President Bashar al-Assad's ability to retain a grip of his country's most populous city of Aleppo.
Whilst most rebel units remain unable to defend themselves against such attacks, a source supplying weapons to certain brigades told the Daily Telegraph a very small number of Surface to air missiles have found their way into rebel hands.
Eleven Syrian soldiers were captured by Turkish troops as they tried to cross into Turkish territory to flee the fighting on Sunday according to a local Turkish daily newspaper. The men were reported to have thrown themselves into the Orontos river, that forms a natural frontier between the two countries, to escape fighting on the border town of Azmarin. Some were using rowing boats whilst other swam for their lives according to the newspaper Today's Zamaan.
As the fighting reaches its frontier Turkey has reportedly bolstered its defences by deploying an 250 tanks and 55 jets of various models along the southern part of its border.
"We will hit back without hesitation if we believe Turkey's national security is in danger,"said Mr Davutoglu.
