Question by Jesus Shat: How come in most movies, the opening credits state "A film by..." and later on "Directed by..."? The beginning credits usually open with "A film by Kim Ki-Duk (For example)" and at the end of the credits, it unnecessarily states "Directed by Kim Ki-Duk". Am I the only one that notices this? It's as though the first part is aimed at film buffs or the art house crowd; as though they're given priority information, based on the word "film". Thoughts on this? Best answer for How come in most movies, the opening credits state "A film by..." and later on "Directed by..."?:

Sometimes a film is produced and directed by the same person.

I think because sometimes you have a person who actually wrote the screenplay but then you have a director who directs what way or direction they want that film to go. Sometimes its the same person if they have experience in directing. If the writer is a newcomer, they may have a professional director who oversees the project. Example - the book Twilight by Stephanie Myers was made into a motion picture. The credit goes to her for writing it but there was someone else who directed it and brought it to life.

A film by- means the writer and director or the same person. The union requires the director to also have a separate title card, so sometimes they're in there twice.
