NEW DELHI â" Australia and India will discuss steps toward cooperation in nuclear power as well as proposals to work together on water technology and energy security, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Wednesday.
"In a new century -- one I describe as an Asian Century -- the case for a stronger, broader and deeper relationship between India and Australia is compelling," Ms. Gillard said in a speech on the third and final day of her visit to the South Asian nation.
Ms. Gillard will meet with India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.
The two leaders are widely expected to announce the start of discussions on exporting uranium to India under a civil nuclear power agreement.
India is keen to source uranium from the world's third-largest exporter, after Kazakhstan and Canada, to ensure enough fuel for its civil nuclear power program.
India isn't a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which has in the past prevented Australia from supplying the country with uranium. It has, however, signed civil nuclear power agreements in recent years with the U.S. and other countries.
Ms. Gillard in December won an intraparty vote to abolish the longstanding policy of the Labour Party, which she heads, of not allowing talks on the matter with India.
Improved economic cooperation in a broad sense could help double bilateral trade to $ 40 billion by 2015, Ms. Gillard said.
