Police question 2 at Pakistani girl's hospital [getdailynow.blogspot.com]
Question by Smile: What is the reason why so many people would use the world "gay" as a synonym for "stupid"? I see people who say that they support gay marriage and like gay people even though they still say "that's gay" to everything just out of habit. Isn't that like saying you're not racist even though you say that's white to everything you think is stupid? Why would they ever say it at all? Best answer for What is the reason why so many people would use the world "gay" as a synonym for "stupid"?:

Homosexuals don't have an exclusive on the word "gay", so the same sort of question might be turned around on them. "What is the reason why so many people would use the world "gay" as a synonym for "homosexual"? Gay used to and still does mean "happy". How many homosexuals are happy and show it, also? So how does that apply readily to them? Get over it. You can't hijack a word, twist its meaning and say that is now what it means and nothing else. If people are going to take a word and turn it into a slang term, then others can do the same thing to that word. "Gay" as a word for "homosexual" is slang. "Gay" for "stupid" or "lame" is slang. "Gay" for "happy" isn't slang. BTW Sometimes all it takes for a person to be offended is for them to choose to take offense. You are wanting to find offense, so you find it. EDIT: Learn to read what people write instead of placing your own meaning on them, Angel. You are as guilty of trying to find offense as is leaf and other posters. I wrote "You can't hijack a word", I never said the word was hijacked. I was stating that a word used as a slang term cannot be taken by any one person or group and used solely to mean that slang term. Therefore, it can't be hijacked. Thinking that it can be is incorrect. The word only correctly means what it originally meant. Any other association people place on it through slang is what those people using it in that way give it. It doesn't have to mean any specific slang term. Automatically thinking it has to is the fault of the person thinking it only belongs as the slang term they themselves associate it with. And you do not speak for all people, so saying how something originated and what the people using it intended and do intend is additionally wrong, as is calling people ignorant who do not bow down to your opinion. And that is what it is; your opinion. If you wish to associate the meaning of a word when used by someone in a specific way, whether they mean it in that way or not, and then find offense in its use, that is your doing. It is how you have chosen to view what they said, and the view you have chosen is narrow to not allow other possibilities. You are choosing, then, to be offended by looking for offense. When that is done, then the fault lays with you and not with others. I find it rather odd and somewhat hypocritical how so many people who wish others to be open-minded about the subjects they are passionate about will in turn tend to be rather narrow-minded in their views concerning those same subjects. To many of these people, being open-minded tends to mean others being willing to accept their viewpoint, but it also means themselves abandoning any other viewpoint. So it is just another form of closed-mindedness. If it was open-mindedness, then there would be the willingness to accept and embrace other viewpoints as being just as possibly worthwhile. Edit: You are being closed-minded because you believe that if a slang term originated from a specific source with a specific meaning, then any further use of that word as a slang is related in some manner to the original deviation of the word. This is how you and others conclude that using the word "gay" for "stupid" or "lame" is a bashing of homosexuals. And while it may mean that to some using the slang term and maybe even sprung forth from that for some as well, that doesn't mean it carries the same connotation for all who use it that way. In fact, as time goes by slang terms get used without people connecting them to any type of origin, or meaning anything other than the meaning the person using the slang associates it with. If you think everyone who uses the word "gay" automatically connects it with "homosexual, then you are being egotistical, especially if those people happen to be children or others being first exposed to English. These people then start using the slan g "gay" to mean "lame" or "stupid", and just because the slang had an other and maybe earlier meaning in its history doesn't make these people's use of the word as slang any less valid or in any way associated with that other meaning. You are attempting to force others to connect "gay" to always meaning "homosexual" so that if used any other way, at least negatively, then you can peg them as being bigoted. I quote from you, "If I told a group of children, adults or teenagers that they were acting "black", changing the word's meaning to "lame, stupid", I would be in deep trouble." That is likely true because the term "black" isn't slang, and so your example isn't valid. In fact, it is more along the lines of taking the word "gay" from its origin of meaning "happy" and then using it to mean "homosexual" as slang. People making a fuss over this is something you and others would condemn them for in the same manner, yet you seem to think they'd have a point when it comes to something else. And heterosexuals didn't choose the term "straight" to apply to themselves. That was the doing of the homosexual community, so this is another point of yours which isn't valid. I would suggest you and many others listen to the works of Lenny Bruce whereas it concerns the power we choose to give words. As I've mentioned before, it is easy to find offense when you are looking for offense to exist, whether offense was ever meant or not. That type of thing seems to happen quite often here on Y!A.

Gay didn't originally mean homosexual. It meant happy. A words definition changes over time and although I don't agree with the way its being used we cant change how so many people talk.

Yea I know what you mean. I support gay marriage and have no issue with gay people but I have to admit I use "gay" instead of "stupid" sometimes too. Sorry! I am trying my best to stop, but to answer your question I think people say it because most people have been conditioned to use that word, ever since I was little everyone around me used it and I think I naturally picked it up without even noticing.

The same reason Fresh, Solid and Proper, were changed from their original meanings back in the 80's. The wod Gay is not owned by the homosexual community. People can use it for whatever they want.

I wouldn't call the fact that people often use it in a negative way or as an insult to be the evolution of the word. From what I can make out, a lot of people disliked gays so they started using the word in a negative way. It caught on and now people use it without thinking about what they're saying.
Answer by Topher
It started as a way to call homosexuals stupid, lame, etc. Though people will say today it isn't meant to insult gay people. I think it is meant as an insult, but an indirect insult by giving the word gay a negative connotation. Think of it as having a reverse history of the N-word. "From what I can make out, a lot of people disliked gays so they started using the word in a negative way." -Yep. "The same reason Fresh, Solid and Proper, were changed from their original meanings back in the 80's. " -Totally different, the connotation of those words hasn't changed.

I use it sometimes, it's a word a lot of us grew up with, so it might be difficult to break the habit. It's important for people to respect others, I only do it around me and my girlfriend, as I wouldn't want to offend anyone else.
