The Israeli navy boarded the Gaza-bound "Estelle" ship seeking to break Israel's naval blockade on Gaza, an army spokesperson confirmed at 11:40 am on Saturday.

The army said the soldiers seized control of the ship, which is carrying pro-Palestinian activists, in accordance with the government's decision and international law, diplomatic efforts to prevent the vessel from reaching Gaza's shore had failed.

"When the passengers made it clear that they would not cooperate or accept the invitation to sail to the Ashdod Port, it was decided to seize the vessel and bring it to the Ashdod Port," the army said in a statement.

"The Navy force operated as planned to guarantee the safety of the soldiers and passengers on the deck. The soldiers did not use force while seizing the ship."

The army added that once the ship reaches Ashdod the passengers will be handed over to police and immigration authorities.

The confirmation follows reports from AFP, who quoted a spokeswoman of the "Estelle" as claiming the ship had "come under attack" from the IDF on Saturday.

"The Estelle is now under attack -- I have just had a message from them by phone," AFP quoted Victoria Strand, a Stockholm-based spokeswoman for the Ship to Gaza Sweden campaign as saying.

Palestinian activists told CNN Israeli ships have surrounded the vessel.

The report follows the failure of diplomatic efforts to stop the ship, after Israel’s United Nations envoy Ron Prosor wrote UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week asking for international intervention to “stop the provocation” of a small ship sailing to Gaza.

According to one official, the letter â€" which said the Vikings had a better moral compass than the passengers of The Estelle, expected to arrive near Gaza in the coming days â€" gave a publicity boost to the ship that is challenging the IDF’s naval blockade of Gaza.

“One ship does not a flotilla make,” said one official of the ship carrying what Prosor called “weekend revolutionaries” with “radical and extremist agendas.”

Israel’s blockade policy remains intact, and the ship will be stopped, one official said.

The ship, sailing under a Finnish flag, set sail in June and has stopped at numerous European ports trying to drum up support and publicity. The vessel, carrying over a dozen passengers, took on additional food and passengers off the coast of Crete earlier this week.

Among the new passengers are five European parliamentarians: Ricardo Sixto Iglesias from Spain, Sven Britton from Sweden, Aksel Hagen from Norway, and Vangelis Diamandopoulos and Dimitris Kodelas from Greece.

The IDF spokesperson added that any organization or country wishing to reach Gaza or move humanitarian aid is able to do so legally and orderly at all times through land passages and in coordination with the Israeli authorities.

Herb Keinon contributed to this report.

Question by : why do feminists say "feminism is needed because men don't do enough work around the house!"? if you married someone who doesn't want to help around the house then how is that anyone else's problem? You chose him, you deal with it, this is not some sexist conspiracy by the "patriarchy" Also, how exactly can you legislate something. How can you legislate what goes on in families personal lives? Put camera's in everyone's home or something? Best answer for why do feminists say "feminism is needed because men don't do enough work around the house!"?:

Its one major reason 75% of divorces are inititated by women. Sometimes its a necessary means of self-preservation, after all, a person only has so much energy. Documented. They end up having to dump the dead weight. Why should women - most of whom have primary childcare duties on top of the endless litany of domestic chores PLUS hold down a paid job outside the home - be forced to suckle a giant, lazy kid too? Smouldering resentment destabilises the marriage and leads to divorce.

Haven't you hear of the new law that feminists are lobbying for - "Cleaning and cooking equality Act"

Because feminists are lazy and spoiled. Yesterday's spoiled teen girls are today's lazy feminists. They are the ones who were handed everything as a child (princess) and didn't have to earn or work for anything. Housekeeping is one of our roles as women, like it or not.

It's another perfect example of how feminism is actually about control and not choice. Feminists believe that they should have the right to tell others how to live their lives. They demand that men do "equal" amount of house-works despite the fact that men tend to be the primary breadwinners of family and even work more hours than theirs wives when two couple are workings. Not to mention the fact that men also do the ot her kind of house-works that women usually don't, like: mowing the lawn, fixing everything around house, changing the car oil etc.. basically the difficult and heavy duty stuff.

It's a perfect example on how people think the word of a feminist = the word of all feminists.

A feminist is simply someone who believes women should have equal rights. If you think women should have equal rights, you're a feminist. If you think a feminist is something else, you should acquaint yourself with a dictionary. I happen to be a feminist, but I have never said and never would say that "feminism is needed because men don't do enough work around the house." It's a nonsense statement. What men do around the house is a personal issue with the people who live with them, not an equal rights issue. If a woman lives with a man who won't do his share of the housework, this has nothing to do with rights. There is no "right" to "have your housemate do their fair share of the housework." If you don't like what your husband, wife or roommate is doing, you have the right to leave.

I le is a personal matter, to be thrashed out by individual couples, not something you can legislate for. it is ironic though that the modern feminist movement was kicked off in the 1960s by betty Friedan's book The Feminine Mystique, in which she emphatically states that a woman should be able to have a career and knock off the housework in an hour or two without troubling her husband at all -Friedan's belief was that housewives didn't have enough to do because housework was so easy, and they should easily be able to combine the housewife role with a career. Funny how it doesn't seem to have worked out.

The irony is, when men DO help out around the house - women tend to do one of two things (sometimes both). Note I said 'tend to', so it by no means 'all women'. 1) complain your efforts are 'not good enough' and nit-pick it to death in an effort to demoralize you from bothering doing it in the future (then they can complain that you don't make any effort to help again). 2) ever heard of a thing called 'maternal gatekeeping'? It's where a woman (often with help from other women, midwife, mother, sister, etc.) will do all in their power to marginalize your parenting efforts. You might rush home from work to put your baby to bed... You get there just in time to see her tip-toeing down the stairs, gesturing "Shhhhh - baby's asleep" to you despite her knowing you were giong to do it tonight... they may crowd around the baby leaving you no room to get a look in, things like that. In short maternal gatekeeping is the art of pushing you (a man) away from 'her' child.

i dont recall ever saying that. feminism is needed because men still do not see women as equal beings.
